A Fantastic Woman: Sebastián Lelio
"This film is a moving story about a transgender woman in Chile. Despite social ostracism and personal humiliation, Marina continues to fight for her rights while maintaining her dignity. Refusing to only be identified by her sex, she struggles to have the freedom to live up to her full potential."

Panorama

WINNER

I Am Not Your Negro: Raoul Peck
"Set in the historical context of the United States civil rights movement in the 1950s and '60s, and through the words of James Baldwin, this documentary continues to be relevant today, triggering universal issues of justice and human rights."

Forum

WINNER

El mar la mar: Joshua Bonnetta, J.P. Sniadecki
"Being lost in the desert transforms into being lost in the cinema. The senses struggle to adjust, becoming attuned and opened to the sights and sounds of the vast, sometimes mystical space. Joshua Bonnetta and J.P. Sniadecki's film teaches viewers to read the signs of the desert by reading signs of the film. We discover an indifferent place, as stories of migrants crossing the border from Mexico into the U.S. face an unforgiving landscape. A fierce but enriching experience."

Newton: Amit Masurkar
"The CICAE Art Cinema Award jury for the Forum programme at the 67th Berlinale, out of as many as 43 films in competition, decided to award wonderful Indian film Newton directed by Amit V Masurkar. This exceptional film, within the rich and varied Forum selection, deals with the universal issue of democracy, and the fight for it, during elections in India. Its multilayered portrayal of Indian culture, its dark humor and ironic approach, as well as its positive use of typical cliches within Indian society gives Newton a unique form and style which will delight audiences in arthouse cinemas all over the world."

Centaur: Aktan Arym Kubat
"This is a film which completely fulfils the CICAE award criterions. The beautiful rural landscape has a history behind and dangers in front. The hero who proudly believes in this values acts single-handedly and makes a legend. The community responds to this action and the drama takes form. Those who help him and those who oppose him are all parts of same origin. We think that the film is very important to be seen by a huge audience, because our knowledge of ancient stories and values - who we are and where we come from - is an antidote against conflict."

Becoming Who I Was: Moon Chang-Yong, Jeon Jin
Ex aqueo with Estiu 1993. "In this beautifully shot tale we learn in a wonderful bittersweet way how much a parent and a child can learn from each other. The filmmaker achieved the most difficult: making the audience laugh and cry many times. The film gave the jury confidence in humanity and if the values of the young hero of this story would be only reflected a little bit by its audience the world will become a better place."

Summer 1993: Carla Simón
Ex aqueo with Becoming Who I Was. "In this remarkable film we learn through the eyes of a little girl how to cope with loss. The lesson that this incredible heroine learns and that moved us to tears is that no matter how much it hurts, it is the unconditional love of the people around you that will ease your pain. Besides the outstanding performance of the young main actress the jury was also very impressed by the beautiful cinematography and sensual mise-en-scène!"
