"Blade Runner" Director Mounting "Cleopatra"

  • SneakPeek
Denis Villeneuve ("Blade Runner 2049") is in negotiations to direct "Cleopatra", with Angelina Jolie attached to star, based on author Stacy Schiff’s best-selling book "Queen of the Nile":

Elizabeth Taylor previously played "Cleopatra" (1963).

The historical 'Cleopatra VII Philopator', believed to be the re-incarnation and embodiment of a goddess...

... was the last person to rule Egypt as a 'pharaoh'. After she died, Egypt became a Roman province.

"...her palace shimmered with onyx and gold but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, 'Cleopatra' was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator.

"She had children by both 'Julius Caesar' and 'Mark Antony', two of the most prominent Romans of the day. With Antony she would attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled both their ends..."

Angelina Jolie to be Honored by American Society of Cinematographers

Angelina Jolie to be Honored by American Society of Cinematographers
The American Society of Cinematographers has selected Angelina Jolie as the recipient of its 2018 Asc Board of Governors Award.

The presentation will be made at the 32nd annual Asc Awards for Outstanding Achievement on Feb. 17 at Hollywood & Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom.

The Asc Board of Governors Award is given to individuals in the industry whose body of work has made “significant and indelible contributions to cinema.” It is the only Asc Award not given to a cinematographer, and is reserved for filmmakers who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form.

“Angelina Jolie sets a high standard,” Asc president Kees van Oostrum said. “She is a true artist, with a strong vision and collaborative spirit. She has also entertained us through her work, but more importantly has brought significant social issues to our attention. For her wide-ranging accomplishments, we are honored to present her with our Board of Governors Award.”

Is Bill Condon’s Bride of Frankenstein being resurrected with Gal Gadot?

Last years microcosmic lifespan of Universal’s Dark Universe, halted by the failure of The Mummy, put paid to a series of run-before-you-could-walk spin-off movies; The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Wolf Man.

Appropriately enough, the only film that appears to have been brought back to life is Bill Condon’s Bride of Frankenstein, which was about to get underway with its London shoot when the bandages began to unravel on Tom Cruise’s summer flop.

It’s now being reported that a production team is being put in place featuring cinematographer Tobias A. Schliessler (A Wrinkle In Time), production designer Sarah Greenwood (Darkest Hour), composer Carter Burwell (Fargo), and costume designer Jacqueline Durran (Beauty and The Beast).

However, such forward momentum would rule out original Bride, Angelina Jolie, who is set to reprise her role in Maleficent 2, with cameras set-to-roll in April on the Disney sequel.

Bride of Frankenstein Revs Back Up to Save Dark Universe?

Bride of Frankenstein Revs Back Up to Save Dark Universe?
Is Universal's Bride of Frankenstein on a path to resurrection? That certainly appears to be the case. Last October, we reported that director Bill Condon's remake of the classic monster movie was delayed indefinitely. The remake was already in pre-production, but the crew were told to pack up shop and head home. Universal's Dark Universe, which optimistically would have seen their classic monster franchises come together in a cinematic universe, was viewed as more or less dead in the water. But now we have news that Bride of Frankenstein may be gearing up for production after all. There may still be hope.

According to a new report, Universal has assembled a brand new production team for Bride of Frankenstein, meaning that they're serious about getting this movie going. There's no telling when they'll actually start filming, but it looks like the studio isn't ready to scrap this thing just yet.

It Looks Like Universal's Bride Of Frankenstein is Going Back Into Development

After Tom Cruise's The Mummy bombed, Universal Pictures had to rethink their whole "Dark Universe" plan. The next film that was supposed to be developed in this Universal Monster cinematic universe was Bride of Frankenstein, but the last we heard, the studio shut down the production and removed it from their release schedule.

The reason for the project being shut down was so that director Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) and the creative team could rework the script and get the project in a place that everyone is happy with. At the time, Universal said:

"After thoughtful consideration, Universal Pictures and director Bill Condon have decided to postpone Bride of Frankenstein. None of us want to move too quickly to meet a release date when we know this special movie needs more time to come together. Bill is a director whose enormous talent has been proven time and again,

Bride of Frankenstein Reboot May Be Moving Forward Again

Director Bill Condon’s Bride of Frankenstein is showing new signs of life, as the project assembles a production crew in order to begin filming sometime this year. The classic monster movie reboot still has Javier Bardem attached to costar as the Frankenstein monster, though the role of the Bride has yet to be officially filled. Angelina Jolie has been first in line to play the Bride for the past few years, but the Oscar-winner is believed to have now passed on that role, and is focusing her attention on the Disney fairy tale sequel Maleficent 2 instead.

Remakes to Look Out For in 2018

One can’t deny the nostalgic appeal that remakes offer audiences today. Studios love to bank on established properties that audiences are well familiar with, little wonder the Hollywood remake machine remains as busy as ever.

Not every remake receives critical praise, however. While some successfully reimagine and adapt the stories of beloved classics, others fail so miserably they fade away unnoticed. Will the remakes billed for release this year do their originals justice? You be the judge. If you’re interested to see which remakes are being released in 2018, we’ve compiled a list for you below.

Angelina Jolie Flaunts Feathers (Again) at Critics' Choice Awards 2018

Angelina Jolie Flaunts Feathers (Again) at Critics' Choice Awards 2018
Feathers appear when angels appear. In this case, the angelic figure is Angelina Jolie, who graced the red carpet in a stunning, strapless, feathery frock at the 2018 Critics' Choice Awards. The bodice of the white dress ended right at her waist, as a ruched skirt draped down at an asymmetrical angle, showing off the actress' toned legs and pointed-toe silver stilettos. Not only does the dress invoke serious Marilyn Monroe vibes (the streamlined skirt modernizes the look), but Angelina's statement earrings and bold red lip definitely bring us back to the heyday of Old Hollywood. The feathered neckline adds much needed texture to the simple gown without overwhelming it...

Directors Guild Sets the Bar With Progressive Nominations

Directors Guild Sets the Bar With Progressive Nominations
If it wasn’t already an issue, Natalie Portman certainly made it one at the Golden Globes: There are talented, award-worthy female directors in the Oscar hunt this year. You just have to nominate them.

While female-centric stories were certainly in the spotlight Sunday night, it was notable that there were no female filmmakers nominated for best director. This despite there being clear choices: Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Dee Rees (“Mudbound”), and Angelina Jolie (“First They Killed My Father”) are all worthy contenders this year.

The Directors Guild of America dodged this bullet Wednesday by nominating Gerwig, making it just the ninth time the group has recognized a woman. In this regard, the guild has a better record than the Academy’s directors branch, which has only nominated four women in the category to date (the last being Kathryn Bigelow, who made history with her win for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010).

In the DGA ranks, Gerwig joins Lina Wertmüller
