As the end credits rolled after my screening of Trey Edward Shults’s It Comes at Night, a perturbed woman behind me angrily groused, “This is bullshit. What comes at night?” In her defense, the mesmerizing trailer for the film from A24 certainly leads you to believe something is in fact coming at night — a concrete something, not a metaphoric something. But no horrific, plague-mutated creatures ever arrive at the red door that separates the apocalyptic outside world from the isolated home of Paul (Joel Edgerton) and his family (wife Carmen Ejogo and son Kelvin Harrison Jr.). What does come […] »

Sony Pictures is fast-tracking its “Men in Black” spinoff, setting the sci-fi pic to bow on May 17, 2019.
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles in the film, which is meant to launch a new franchise with fresh talent involved. Sony had originally planned on combining the “Men and Black” and “21 Jump Street” franchises, but have since tabled that idea.
“John Wick: Chapter 3” is the only other film so far debuting on May 17, with Disney’s “Aladdin” — starring Smith — opening the following week.
The original movie followed Smith and Jones, who played agents of a secret organization known as the Men in Black and protected Earth from intergalactic bad guys. The »

Guardians of the Galaxy was considered a risky proposition for Marvel Studios, even after the runaway success of their cinematic universe building films like Iron Man and The Avengers. These characters hang around in outer space! There are aliens on the team! There's a talking raccoon! So it was nothing short of incredible when Guardians of the Galaxy earned nearly $800 million and a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. A big part of James Gunn's action-comedy masterpiece depends upon the charisma of Chris Pratt, who leads the team as Peter Quill, the film's relatable half-earthling who rocks badass tunes in his headphones while kicking ass as Star-Lord. But it almost didn't happen that way. As there were plenty of other big names vying for the coveted role.
After dominating the summer box office, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is in talks to join Guardians of the Galaxy 2 star Bradley Cooper in a new thriller entitled Deeper, for director Kornel Mundruczo. No production schedule was given for this project, and no release date has been set by MGM, so it's possible that this may not go into production until after Wonder Woman 2, which is expected to start sometime next year, with Warner Bros. already setting a December 13, 2019 release date. Then again, if this project comes together quickly, it's possible that she could shoot it before returning as Diana of Themyscira.
Deadline broke the casting news today, although no details have been given regarding Gal Gadot's character. The story centers on a disgraced astronaut (Bradley Cooper), who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly discovered oceanic trench, believed to now be the lowest point on Earth. »
Jason from Mnpp here, wishing a happy 44th birthday to the perennially underrated James Marsden today! He's not so underrated that he's ever really gone without work at least (and he's currently riding the zeigeist a bit with the success of Westworld, although I don't know if his moon-eyed compoke Teddy is really what's keeping anybody coming back to that show week after week) but underrated he still somehow seems. That's an impressive impression to give for someone as breathtakingly gorgeous as him! No small feat.
I suppose it's the "Nice Guy Loser" role he's been called on to play time and again - we've watched him watch The Girl go off with the right Mr. Right so many times we've built a stockpile of empathy for him. Speaking of, for today's for "Beauty vs Beast" let's hit up just one of those roles, the 2007 hit film Enchanted (which insanely is turning 10 in November, »

It’s based on the book by Jason Matthews, and Lawrence co-stars in this one with Joel Edgerton. She plays Dominika, a woman forced to became a ‘sparrow’. A sparrow is a Russian secret service operative trained to seduce people to get information.
The first trailer and synopsis for the movie has now landed too, and you can see it right here…
Here's the synopsis...

In the film's first trailer, Egorova is seen after her Sparrow School training, which involves "young officers trained to seduce and manipulate," a voiceover explains. "To use their bodies, to use everything."
In the clip, Egorova sports many looks to deceive her targets – from switching between various blonde and brown wigs to wearing alluring dresses – while leaving a bloody and deadly trail in her wake. »

There’s plenty of exciting movie news to report today, so we’ll jump right into it.
Firstly, the first trailer for Jennifer Lawrence’s next movie was released. Red Sparrow steers Lawrence away from her tormented housewife character in this week’s mother! and lets her take a little more control of the situation. She plays a Russian ballerina turned spy who is tasked with killing a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton). Her Hunger Games stunt skills look like they get put to good use here, and we can’t wait to see how this insane cast (Mary-Louise Parker, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeremy Irons, Charlotte Rampling) takes on a Russian spy thriller. »

We have been waiting for a Black Widow film since she first showed up in Iron Man 2. We will probably continue to wait for it, but we are getting the next best thing. Nearly the same story, just outside of the McU, and starring Jennifer Lawrence, as Fox has released the first trailer for Red Sparrow. Check it out below.

"I heard about a program... Young officers, trained to seduce and manipulate." Perfect timing with this trailer, considering Mother! opens in theaters this weekend. 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first official trailer for spy thriller Red Sparrow, starring Jennifer Lawrence as the mysterious double agent spy named Dominika Egorova. This is the latest film from director Francis Lawrence, who last directed the final three Hunger Games films also starring Jennifer Lawrence. This time they're telling a much different story, with some sleek cinematography. In addition to Lawrence, the cast includes Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons. This first trailer doesn't show too much, but it is a very nice tease that will definitely get your attention. I'm certainly interested to see what this is all about. Even though we always have plenty of spy movies every year, this one looks good. Here's the first »

There's a good chance you haven't heard much about Jennifer Lawrence's next starring role. That's because the upcoming film is still in production and is set for a 2018 release, and it only just released its first trailer. Called Red Sparrow, it's an adaptation of the novel that shares the same name. In short, it's about a Russian prima ballerina, Dominika, whose career ends after she shatters her ankle. With her life in pieces, she lashes out at those who hurt her and winds up in the most unexpected place: a training academy for Russian spies. It only gets wilder from there. This past Spring, I was able to view some exclusive footage of the film and to get further insight from director Francis Lawrence. I don't want to jump the gun, but this has the potential to be Lawrence's most captivating role to date. Yes, even after seeing everything she goes through in Mother! »

Based on the book by former CIA officer Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow reunites Jennifer Lawrence with her Hunger Games director, Francis Lawrence with Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Jeremy Irons, and Mary Louise Parker rounding out the cast.
Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is drafted against her will to become a “sparrow,” a trained seductress in the Russian security service. Dominika learns to use her body as a weapon, but struggles to maintain her sense of self during the dehumanizing training process. Finding her power in an unfair system, she emerges as one of the program’s strongest assets. Her first target is Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), a CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive infiltration of Russian intelligence. The two young operatives fall into a spiral of attraction and deception, which threatens their careers, allegiances and the security of both countries.

The footage, unveiled Thursday, shows her in a brunette wig and a low-cut red dress on a bed with a drink, followed by a man placing a mobile phone and money clip on the table and a disembodied male voice commanding her: “Take off your dress.”
There’s a shot of curtains swirling, then a quick shot of a man being strangled, followed by Lawrence walking down stairs — now as a blonde in a low-cut black dress. She’s then seen in a black swimsuit following a CIA spy played by Joel Edgerton at a pool and then again as a blonde with a short wig, somewhat resembling Charlize Theron’s look in “Atomic Blonde.”

Jennifer Lawrence re-teams with Francis Lawrence, who directed her in three installments of “The Hunger Games” franchise, for “Red Sparrow.” A trailer has arrived for the anticipated spy thriller, and in its first few seconds Lawrence seems to be playing a role very unlike Katniss Everdeen. She’s wearing a glamorous red dress with perfect hair and make up, and is sitting passively on a bed when a man enters the room, puts cash on the nightstand, and orders her to take off her dress. But there’s more to the picture. And it quickly becomes clear that like Katniss, Lawrence’s character in “Red Sparrow” has a lot going on under the surface — and she’s a fierce force to be reckoned with.
“When I was in Moscow I heard about a program,” a voiceover explains. “Young officers trained to seduce and manipulate. To use their bodies. To use everything. Call them Sparrows — that’s what she is.”
Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova, who is, according to the film’s official synopsis, “many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced.”
Now Dominika is left figuring out how to reconcile the past and the present,
“the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.”
It looks like Dominika is going to kick a lot of ass in “Red Sparrow,” and while the trailer may cause some to roll their eyes — yes, another movie where a female spy relies heavily on her sexuality — it seems as though Dominka won’t just be portrayed as a pretty face who knows her way around weapons. And it’s not unlikely that “Red Sparrow” will tackle the fact that, as the film’s summary details, Dominka was manipulated into using her body as a Sparrow.
Lawrence’s “mother!” hits theaters this Friday, September 15. The controversial movie sees Lawrence and Javier Bardem playing a couple living in a remote house who receive uninvited guests.
