Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: It's the procedural playoffs -- sweeps month!

3 November 2009 1:38 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It’s sweeps month! It’s sweeps month! Craziness will happen! Casting will be stunty! Networks will actually try! Yes, Beatniks, it’s that magical time of year when whatever the actual televised content on procedurals—good or bad—it is highly unlikely to be indifferent. Those networks need our eyeballs, so if they want ’em, they'd better be willing to throw us a CSI triple crossover, resurrect long-lost castmembers, and double the Deschanel quotient! (Oh wait, no, Zooey’s not popping up on Bones till Dec. 10. Shoot. That’s one bit of holiday stunt casting I do approve of, »

The Philanthropist: NBC Drama Officially Cancelled

21 October 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

NBC's not being very charitable to fans of their summer series, The Philanthropist. The feel-good drama has been cancelled.

The Philanthropist revolves around Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a once-selfish billionaire who decides to channel his money and power to help those in need. The series also features the talents of Jesse L. Martin, Neve Campbell, Michael Kenneth William, Lindy Booth, Krista Allen, and James Albrecht.

For a summer show, the drama did pretty well in the ratings initially. But, as the weeks wore on, the numbers fell off. NBC stuck with it and ran all eight episodes, with the last one airing on August 12th. Though it looked unlikely that the show would be renewed, many viewers have been holding out hope. The network didn't make an announcement about the show's fate but they rarely do.

Now, an upcoming DVD »

Doink-Doink: Happy 20th, Law & Order!

23 September 2009 6:35 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

What do you call a dozen fake lawyers and cops sitting around eating cake? Why, the 20th-anniversary Law & Order reunion, of course! Castmembers past and present gathered on the show's New York set today in honor of the procedural's upcoming 20th season, which will tie it with Gunsmoke as the longest-running drama in TV history. Sadly, Jerry Orbach didn't live to see his show tie a record (nor to see that plenty of people—in our office, at least—stopped watching after he left).  But his old partners Benjamin Bratt and Jesse L. Martin joined the celebration, as did former ADAs Angie Harmon, Carrie Lowell and Jill Hennessy and original turned Svu captain Dann... »

The Philanthropist: Sinking Ratings; Keep It or Cancel It?

28 July 2009 11:09 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Another of NBC's new Summer series, The Philanthropist, got off to a moderately successful start in the ratings but has been losing steam quickly. Should NBC show some charity and keep it around or should they just cancel it already?

The Philanthropist tells the story of Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a billionaire playboy who is haunted by the death of his only child. After rescuing a young boy from a hurricane, Rist begins using his wealth to help those in need. The show also features the talents of Jesse L. Martin, Neve Campbell, Michael K. Williams, Lindy Booth, Bonnie Henna, Dominique McElligott, and James Albrecht.

The drama premiered on June 24th and attracted an average of 7.41 million viewers and a 2/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. For a Summer series, that looks like pretty decent performance on the surface but less so when you look at the specifics.

The Philanthropist: Review & Discussion

27 June 2009 7:16 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Philanthropist, starring James Purefoy (HBO’s Rome, A Knight’s Tale, Resident Evil) as Teddy Rist, started off by confusing me a bit but by the end of the episode, I found the story to have a compelling emotional element that kept me tuned in.

The show opens in the middle of a chase scene where Rist is being fired upon by some locals while on a river bank, barefoot in a jungle somewhere.  We then jump to a bar scene where he’s chatting with a young lady while she’s bar tending and he explains in a backtrack sort of fashion how he came to being shot at on this riverbank.

They use this venue of Rist talking with the bartender to recant a quick history of how he got to this point of time.

Review: NBC’s ‘The Philanthropist’

24 June 2009 2:39 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I got a chance to watch the pilot for NBC’s new show The Philanthropist, which debuts tonight at 10Pm/9C, and I have to say while I was quite entertained for most of it , I was also somewhat underwhelmed as well. Its not that the show is bad or anything, quite the contrary. It has great production value, lots of action, a mostly engaging cast and even a morale. I just prefer my morals slightly less “in your face.”

By way of backstory, The Philanthropist follows the adventures of Billionaire playboy Teddy Rist, the “99th-richest man in the world” and his search for the meaning of it all after his son dies tragically a year prior. Teddy is undergoing a “crisis of conscience” and realizes that just writing a check isn’t enough anymore, he needs to “do something” in order to make a difference in the world. While I applaud that sentiment, »

The Art of Living Well: An Advance Review of NBC's "The Philanthropist"

24 June 2009 8:17 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

"Happiness is the art of living well." We're told this in the opening minutes of NBC's new drama The Philanthropist by the series' main character, billionaire playboy Teddy Rist (Rome's James Purefoy). He's the sort of tycoon who is just as at home in the bedroom as he is in the boardroom, bedding young, lithe things and selling the planet's natural resources with equal relish. But for Teddy, there's a false air to his statement, as if he's trying way too hard to believe in the triteness of that aphorism. What follows then is part adventure story, part spiritual awakening saga as Teddy must come to grips with his own humanity as he discovers that happiness isn't material possessions (especially for a man with a Gulfstream as a toy) but rather philanthropy. He comes to this conclusion during the hurricane-induced flooding of a Nigerian resort, where he saves the life »

Review: The Philanthropist

17 June 2009 1:29 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Someone’s moving to 10/9c Wednesdays on NBC, and his name is Teddy Rist. He’s all about living the life that only a billionaire playboy could, until a life-altering event involving a little boy changes his entire perspective, and turns his life around. The Philanthropist tells the ongoing story of his journey through Western Africa, slogging vaccine (and his undeniably handsome face) to afflicted villages, and managing his money a little better. What brought about this change in him? A little boy, who forced him to lay aside selfishness, and who saved him while on a routine business trip to Nigeria. As we see Teddy’s metamorphosis to Mr. Altruism begin to take place, we learn that he is mourning the loss of his young son, and saving the little boy starts to fill this hole in his heart.   The more he thinks about it, he despises the former life he led. »

Another Promo for NBC’s ‘The Philanthropist’ Now Online

4 June 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Previously here at The Flickcast, we brought you the first promo for the new show The Philanthropist, which premieres June 24th on NBC. The show is an interesting mix of action, drams, suspense and seems to have great production value, an interesting and talented cast and all of the other ingredients that usually go into a hit show. Its one that will undoubtedly make its way onto our Tivos so we can check it out.

To further illustrate this point, we’ve got another promo for the show to, well, show. In this one, billionaire Teddy Rist who, according to NBC’s info, “loves women, money and power but after the tragic death of his only child, has an awakening and becomes the world’s first vigilante philanthropist”, saves a boy from drowning, hand carries a vaccine across mountains to villagers, gets shot at and is told he’s “not a superhero. »

NBC’s New ‘The Philanthropist’ Promo

26 May 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I’m a fan of TV shows with action, suspense, good acting, fast cars and well-written episodes. Sometimes many of those elements come together to form great television programs such as The X-Files, The Wire, Dollhouse or Fringe. NBC ’s got a program that debuts next Winter, in the post-Heroes timeslot, called The Philanthropist and it looks like, at least based on the promo and info, it may end up being another one of those shows that just works.

The show, in case you’re not familiar, concerns billionaire Teddy Rist who, according to NBC’s info about the show, “loves women, money and power. After the tragic death of his only child, Teddy has an awakening and becomes the world’s first vigilante philanthropist — a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need.” Sounds interesting.

Even better is that the show is produced by by Universal Media Studios, »
