'A Beautiful Mind' Stars React to Taxi Crash Deaths of John and Alicia Nash

Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash, 86, and his wife Alicia Nash, 82 -- both subjects of the Oscar-winning movie "A Beautiful Mind" -- died Saturday, May 23 in a car crash in New Jersey. According to State Police, the taxi they were in lost control when trying to pass another car; it crashed into the guard rail and the Nashes were ejected from the taxi and pronounced dead at the scene.

Alicia was credited with saving John during his battle with schizophrenia, which was chronicled in Sylvia Nasar's biography "A Beautiful Mind" and adapted in the movie. The 2001 film was accused of revising history, but won Academy Awards for Best Picture; Best Director; Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Jennifer Connelly; and Best Adapted Screenplay. Russell Crowe was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for playing John Nash.

Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr, subject of the 2001 Oscar-winning film "A Beautiful Mind," and his wife Alicia Nash were both killed Saturday when their taxi crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike. He was 86 and she was 82 years old. John and Alicia were passengers in a Ford Crown Victoria taxi when their vehicle attempted to pass a Chrysler and hit a guardrail. They were both ejected from the vehicle. The taxi driver sustained non life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the other vehicle was treated for back and neck injuries. John was an instructor at MIT and earned the Nobel Prize in economics in 1994 for his work in game theory, sharing the award with two other mathematicians. He was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and attended Princeton University. John and Alicia married in 1957 and had a son, John. A Beautiful Mind” producer Brian Grazer was among many who were shocked by the news that Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash and his wife Alicia were killed Saturday in a car crash in New Jersey.

Grazer, who produced the Oscar-winning 2001 biopic directed by his Imagine Entertainment partner Ron Howard, realized that the end for the couple, while tragic, was in keeping with how they spent virtually every moment of their lives — together. Alicia was the grounding force that helped John overcome mental illness and other obstacles to articulating what proved to be innovative theories on incredibly complex topics.

“Their lives ended together in the same way that they lived,” Grazer told Variety. “Theirs was a such a brilliant collaboration. Alicia was so powerful in enabling him to have his moments of triumph. His life was really hard. The beauty came from the power of their love to create those triumphs. »

John Nash, the Princeton University mathematician whose brilliance and mental health struggles inspired the Oscar-winning film “A Beautiful Mind,” died in a car crash in New Jersey on Saturday.

He was 86. Nash’s 82-year old wife, Alicia Nash, also died after a taxi that they were riding in crashed into a guard rail. A spokesman for the New Jersey state police did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but multiple reports state the Nashs were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the car.
