Box Office: ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ Shooting to $20 Million Debut, ‘Logan’ Not So ‘Lucky’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” won’t have to fight hard to claim the new No. 1 spot in the box office. The late summer entry starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to easily win this rather slow weekend.

Lionsgate’s buddy action comedy is shooting towards a $20 million debut after taking in $8 million from 3,377 theaters on Friday, including Thursday night previews. While that number is on the higher end of early estimates, it’s still one of the smallest opening weekends for a first place film in 2017.

In its second frame, “Annabelle: Creation” from Warner Bros. falls to a still-respectable second place. The fourth film in the “Conjuring Universe” is on track for a $15 million showing after bringing in $5 million from 3,542 locations on Friday.

‘Super Troopers 2’ Lands Spring 2018 Release Date

18 August 2017 11:24 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fox Searchlight has set an April 20, 2018, release date for “Super Troopers 2” — 17 years after the original.

Jay Chandrasekhar is directing the comedy sequel, as he did on the original. Filmmaking team Broken Lizard raised $4.4 million in a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in 2015 that saw more than 50,000 contributors. It was one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns for a movie along with the $5.7 million raised by fans for the “Veronica Mars” movie starring Kristen Bell.

Donation incentives for “Super Tropers 2” on the first day included a producer title for $10,000, a speaking actor role for $10,000, a trip to the ballpark with the main actors for $15,000, and the patrol car to be used in the filming for $35,000. “Super Troopers 2” met the initial goal of $2 million (set by Fox Searchlight) in 26 hours.

Super Troopers 2” reunites all five Troopers from the original film — Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. The »

John Boyega Hints Again at Possible Cameos by Princes William and Harry in ‘Jedi’

18 August 2017 8:47 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

John Boyega has hinted again that heirs to the British throne Prince William and Prince Harry and actor Tom Hardy have cameos in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program Friday morning to promote Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” Boyega was asked about the rumors he fueled when last on the show – that the two royals had secret cameos in “The Last Jedi” as stormtroopers – and whether the princes had lines.

“I think they took that scene out,” Boyega said jokingly, then added: “I’ve had enough with those Prince William secrets, man. They came on set; they were there, man. Tom Hardy was there, too – I said it. I’m sick of hiding this.”

The actor, who plays former stormtrooper Finn in the sequel trilogy, said questions had dogged him ever since the rumors first began circulating in April 2016, when William and Harry visited the “Jedi” set (pictured). “Every time I get »

Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher to Star in ‘Shaft’ Sequel

18 August 2017 10:33 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After originally planning a full reboot of the ’70s classic, New Line is reverting back to a familiar formula for the next installment of “Shaft,” while also leaving the door open for a new face to take over the franchise.

Sources tell Variety that Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to reprise his role of the titular character with “Survivor’s Remorse” star Jessie T. Usher in talks to play Jackson’s son in the film.

Tim Story is directing a script from “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.

The original 1971 version — based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel — starred Richard Roundtree as a smooth private detective who’s hired by a drug lord to find his kidnapped daughter. The character became a pop culture icon and the theme song, written by Isaac Hayes, went on to win an Oscar.

Paramount Pictures rebooted the film in 2002 with Samuel L. Jackson taking over the role, and »

It's a trap! Or maybe not.

Adam Driver will intrigue Star Wars fans with a Sunday interview on the Today show in which he discusses his Sith character, Kylo Ren.

The 33-year-old actor doesn't give anyway any specifics, obviously, but he does make a comment that is interesting when asked by Willie Geist if fans "will be happy with that happens to Kylo."

Driver responds, "God, I hope. I think it will be hopefully unexpected."

Now, this could mean anything. Perhaps Luke or Rey cut him down or maybe he pulls a Darth Vader and redeems himself. Or maybe none of the »

Bill Maher Suggests Replacing Confederate Statues With Colin Kaepernick Statues (Video)

1 hour ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

After a chaotic week in the U.S., there was a lot to talk about on “Real Time With Bill Maher” this past Friday night, and the renewed scrutiny towards Confederate Civil War statues was one of those topics. That got Bill Maher to wondering: what if the statues that are being taken down in towns from Baltimore to Durham were replaced with memorials to things that Donald Trump and other “southern heritage” defenders didn’t like? “What happened to Southern hospitality?” Maher asked his panel. “Just the idea that, ‘Well, if this offends some people, I won’t do it. »

President Trump on Saturday broke his silence on the abrupt departure of White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, belatedly thanking his former campaign chairman. “I want to thank Steve Bannon for his service,” the president tweeted on Saturday morning, one full day after Bannon announced he would leave the White House and return to his role overseeing the far-right Breitbart News operation. Trump also could not resist another dig at the Democrat whom he upset in last fall’s election, noting of Bannon: “He came to the campaign during my run against Crooked Hillary Clinton – it was great!” I want to thank. »

‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ Shoots for $20 Million Opening at Box Office

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Lionsgate’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” has taken advantage of weak competition at the August box office to take the No. 1 spot this weekend. The Samuel L. Jackson/Ryan Reynolds action comedy is estimated to make $20.5 million this weekend from 3,377 screens, performing on the upper end of the $17-20 million range set for the film by independent trackers. The solid performance of “Hitman’s Bodyguard” ran against the new conventional wisdom in Hollywood that poor scores on Rotten Tomatoes can kill a film, as the star power of Jackson and Reynolds seems to have outweighed the film’s disappointing 39 percent score. »
