Storyline

Gunnery Sergeant Jim Moore is one of the toughest Drill Instructors on Parris Island. But he's got a thorn in his side: Pvt. Owens, who always seems to foul up when the pressure's on. Convinced that "there's a man underneath that baby powder," Sgt. Moore drives Owens to the point of desertion. Making things worse, Capt. Anderson has given Moore three days to make the scared private into Marine material, "or I'll personally cut the lace off his panties and ship him out!" Adding to the pressure, Moore also juggles a budding romance with a shop girl. Written by Michael J. Hayde <mmeajv@earthlink.net>

Trivia

At one point while Sgt. Moore and the captain are arguing, the captain dismissively speaks of Owens needing "lace removed from his panties." Jack Webb lobbied, in vain, to have that line removed or changed, because the word "panties" embarrassed Webb. See more »

Goofs

After the Captain signs Pvt. Owens general discharge paper and as they leave the office to go meet Owens Mother, they zoom in on the paper and the top two corners are very ruffled. Once they return and the Captain picks the discharge paper back up and the camera zooms in, the top two corners are in perfect condition. See more »

no one has done it better
16 April 2007 | by See all my reviews

I had the good fortune to be at Perris Island in the fall of 1959. The DI showed one evening at the outdoor theater directly in front of our barracks, Plt 162, B Co, 1st Bn, 1st ITR.

Although we hadn't been there long enough to even think about seeing a movie, we could hear those that were laughing. It's one of the many indelible memories of my thirteen weeks at PI.

At some later date, I got to actually see it in a theater. I'm still convinced that, to date, it remains the most realistic portrayal of the experience in the late 1950's ever done. No one has done it better than Jack Webb...
