Check Out 'The Messenger,' 'Uncertainty' And 'William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe' In This Week's unLimited

10 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After the record-breaking success of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" over the weekend, I'm more hopeful for films starting out in limited release. This week's recommendations may not have the distinction of being championed by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, so if you find any of them worth seeing based on my recommendation, it may be more necessary for you to make the effort to get them to play near you.

"The Messenger"

What it is: A skewed romantic drama about a young Iraq War vet (Ben Foster) who is assigned to the Army's Casualty Notification service, where he's partnered with a captain played by Woody Harrelson. While delivering the bad news, he falls for one of the notified widows (Samantha Morton).

Reasons to see it: The film has won awards at the Berlin and Deauville film festivals and as of this writing has a perfect critical score at Rotten Tomatoes. »

Will Ugly Betty Move to Wednesdays? If So, What Does that Mean for Lost?

10 November 2009 6:53 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Last night we mentioned that ABC was going to pass up on ordering the back-nine episodes of Eastwick, effectively ending its run when the already-filmed episodes have aired.

The question remains: what happens to Eastwick's 10:00 p.m. spot on Wednesday nights slot?  That's prime TV real estate.  For a number of years Lost has aired on Wednesday nights, at both 9:00 and 10:00.  The season 6 return date is still undecided, but with Eastwick's demise, is a 10:00 spot on Wednesday night guaranteed for Lost's final season?

Not so fast, according to E!Online's Kristen:

According to sources, ABC higher-ups are considering moving Ugly Betty to Wednesdays at 10 in January as part of a flashy relaunch of the show in an effort to save it. The thinking is that Betty would complement new hits Modern Family and Cougar Town nicely, and make ABC a solid destination for comedy on Wednesday night. »

10 Awesome Foreign Actresses in Movies You Must See!

25 September 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

They're young, beautiful and talented, but some of them maybe quite unfamiliar to some of you. In our latest List of 10, tMF compilled 10 Foreign (if you like, Non-American) actresses and the must-see movies that made them 'hot properties' locally. Some of them joined Hollywood already - but have you seen them at their Best?

- - -

- - - It's a pity many of the roles given to them in Hollywood are not what you can call 'prestige' roles. Most of them are given the usual run-of-the-mill characters. Why not take a good look at their previous works and find out why we think they're awesome!

- - -

# 10 - Maria Valverde (Spain) - Maria Valverde was born in Madrid and says she always wanted to become an actress. She finally fulfilled her dream at the age of 16 with a leading role in Manuel Martín Cuenca movie, La flaqueza del bolchevique. »

House Is Back!

22 September 2009 7:58 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

House is back and I have no idea what that means.

Last season’s finale was so jaw-droppingly good that I spent the better part of my summer wondering what this season, the show’s sixth, was going to be like.  My favorite fantasy was imagining House living with, and helping the cast of, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. For while the show started off as, and continues to be, a medical mystery; it has evolved beyond that.

The first season, and even into the second season, the show revolved around the genius that is Gregory House.  Every episode was about how he, and his team, could find the truth of the situation in the smallest, most mundane of details.  We, the audience, were just along for the ride.  We were there to watch House harass his colleagues and then name the Obscure Medical Phenomenon of the Week. »

Tom Tykwer Directing German-Language Film 'Drei' Next

22 September 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Run Lola Run and Perfume director Tom Tykwer is set to make his first German-language feature in nearly a decade titled Drei (which means Three in German). The film is a comedy-drama centered on a love triangle. Tykwer's last German-language film was The Princess and the Warrior from 2000. Produced by Berlin-based X Filme, Drei is described as a "tragicomic film about love, morality and gender in late modern Germany, set against late modern Berlin backdrops -- a story of a love triangle with social and cultural-philosophical depth." Sounds like it could be a good return to form for Tykwer and a return to homeland. Although I didn't really care for The International, I still love Tykwer, and just think back to Run Lola Run or one of my all-time favorites, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. If anyone also saw Paris Je T'aime, his sequence in that film was »

Julian Gilbey exclusive interview: British director talks ‘Reckoning Day’

14 September 2009 8:39 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

British director Julian Gilbey, best known for his 2007 film Rise of the Footsolider, finally sees his directorial debut, Reckoning Day, released on DVD next week. An ultra-violent action movie made on a shoestring budget, Reckoning Day was completed in 2002 – so it’s been a long time coming. As a film it is certainly flawed: bearing the hallmarks of a director who, by his own admission, was looking to experiment and find his way, and featuring a cast of willing but limited novice actors. The script is often suspect and the progression of events sometimes nonsensical but, as Julian explains, mitigating factors there most certainly were. Amicable, well-spoken, and forthcoming, he discusses Reckoning Day itself, the difficulties facing low-budget movie production, and what the future holds…   First things first - why the 7 year wait for Reckoning Day on DVD? We’ve had a nightmare with distribution basically! Unfortunately I got terribly »

Today's Short: "Dash and Cash"

27 August 2009 8:43 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

We've seen promo materials outdo the movies it's supposed to promote before. Dash and Cash, though, is pretty out there for a supplemental material. The remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 opens in Japan this week, and local distributor United Pictures hired the hyperkinetic Japanese cult director Sabu—a guy who seems to have let Run Lola Run inspire his entire career—to make this strange Pelham-inspired short as part of its marketing. Call it a hunch, but I don't think Sabu bothered seeing the Tony Scott film.

Every week, editors Mickey O'Connor and Adam Bryant satisfy your need for TV scoop. Please send all questions to mega_scoop@tvguide.com.

What's going on with Cuddy, Wilson, Foreman, Cameron and Chase while House is in the mental institution? — RBlythe

Mickey: First off, have you seen this Season 6 preview? Because I just noticed something awesome: Dr. House is kissing the brilliant Franka Potente (Run Lola Run, the Bourne films), and she's wearing a lab coat. Hmm... Until we get to that, though, only Wilson and House will appear in the season premiere, which takes place at the Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital. After that, look for Foreman to take the lead back at Princeton-Plainsboro, which will cause a rift in his relationship with Thirteen. What do you people have against the lovely Olivia Wilde anyway?

Do you know if Amita accepts Charlie's proposal on Numbers? — Marie

Review of "And Then Came Lola"

24 August 2009 1:51 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

And Then Came Lola is a sugar rush of a lesbian movie.

Starring Ashleigh Sumner, Jill Bennett, and Cathy DeBuono, and directed by Ellen Seidler and Megan Siler, it plays out like a twisty, lighter Run Lola Run with a massive dose of queerness.

Lola (Sumner) is a laid back photographer who’s on the verge of a romantic breakthrough with her new girlfriend, Casey (Bennett), who is the straitlaced Bert to Lola’s Ernie. As the film begins, we witness a fantastic sex scene between the two dissolve into a dream, as Lola’s phone interrupts her reverie. It’s Casey, and she needs Lola to pick up a set of all-important prints for a crucial business meeting with Danielle (DeBuono), who also happens to be Casey’s ex-girlfriend.

Lola runs out the door &#8212 quite literally &#8212 and encounters a tragic-comedy of obstacles keeping her from being punctual the one time she needs to be. »

Moritz Bleibtreu Set to Play Mephisto in Faust Remake

18 August 2009 5:20 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The name Moritz Bleibtreu might not roll off your tongue, but no doubt you've seen his work in such widely divergent films as Run Lola Run, Munich, and (my personal favorite) Das Experiment. Interestingly, as Das Experiment undergoes an American remake, Bleibtreu is about to embark on a redux of his own: The classic German legend Faust with director Oskar Roehler at the helm.

According to today's Variety, Bleibtreu is the first cast member signed for Roehler's adaptation for Tele Muenchen Group and its production subsidiary Clasart. The two men have worked together three times already so it's obvious they have developed quite a good rapport.

Faust itself has been inspiring authors, filmmakers, dancers, musicians, playwrights, and more for centuries. In its simplest form, it's the story of a man who makes a pact with the Devil (aka Mephistopheles, to be played by Bleibtreu) in exchange for knowledge. It should »

Beauty Break: Emmanuelle Béart

14 August 2009 7:08 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Today is Emmanuelle Béart's 46th birthday. Here she is to your left earlier this summer with another Gallic great Isabelle Huppert. Huppert is still an arthouse draw in the states but it seems like it's been ages since Béart made it to our screens in any significant way. There's been a teensy run here and there (Strayed, The Witnesses) but the last film that won any real attention was 8 Women (2002) also starring Huppert... and Catherine Deneuve and Fanny Ardant and Ludivine Sagnier. Mon dieu, je l'aime!

The last time I remember hearing other Americans talk about Béart was in college in the early to mid90s when Béart had that critically acclaimed run of Un Couer en Hiver (Cesar nom), L'Enfer, A French Woman and Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud (Cesar nomination) but international stardom is a tough thing to maintain for anyone, no matter how beautiful or talented. Which was the best year for movies: 1977, 1994, or 1999?

5 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last week, we posted a story about how 1984 was the best movie year ever when it comes to films you actually want to watch on a rainy day playing hooky from work. Movies like Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, This is Spinal Tap, Footloose, and The Terminator. Movies that were the exact opposite of the highfalutin' offerings from 1939 -- the year critics always cite as the greatest Hollywood vintage of all time. Don't get us wrong, there were some decent high-brow movies from 25 years ago, too, like Amadeus and The Killing Fields. But mostly we were talking about movies that were, you know, fun. And while some of you agreed with us about 1984's greatness, others were outraged. Apoplectic. Even concerned for our sanity. Some even made cases for other "greatest years". And we listened.
